What is więzadła spojenia łonowego?

The więzadła spojenia łonowego (ligaments of the pubic symphysis) are the ligaments associated with the pubic symphysis, a midline cartilaginous joint connecting the left and right pubic bones. These ligaments provide stability and limit movement at this joint. The ligaments of the pubic symphysis are:

  • Superior Pubic Ligament: The Superior Pubic Ligament is a thick band that connects the superior aspects of the pubic bones. It provides significant stability and resists shearing and rotational forces.

  • Inferior Pubic Ligament (Arcuate Pubic Ligament): The Inferior Pubic Ligament is located inferiorly and arches under the pubic symphysis. It is a strong, thick band that also contributes to the stability of the joint.

These ligaments are important for maintaining the integrity of the pelvic ring and enabling weight-bearing and locomotion. During pregnancy, the hormone relaxin causes these ligaments to relax and become more flexible, allowing for expansion of the pelvic cavity during childbirth. This can also result in pubic symphysis pain or dysfunction.
